What is EMC?
Acclimation is not determined by the number of days flooring sits on a jobsite. It is determined by moisture balance.
Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) is calculated from the room's temperature and relative humidity.
It tells you the moisture content the wood will naturally reach if it remains in that environment long enough — the target the flooring is moving toward.
Moisture Content (MC) is the wood's current moisture level, measured with a calibrated moisture meter.
It tells you where the flooring is right now on its way toward equilibrium.
When the flooring's measured MC closely matches the room's calculated EMC, the wood has reached equilibrium with the environment. This provides scientific confirmation that the flooring has acclimated to the jobsite conditions.
Matching EMC alone does not mean you should install
Reaching equilibrium is only one part of the decision. Before installation, the following must also be verified:
- The building is enclosed and weather-tight.
- The HVAC system has been operating under normal living conditions.
- The subfloor meets the manufacturer's moisture requirements.
- The flooring manufacturer's installation instructions have been followed.
When all of these conditions are satisfied — and the flooring's measured moisture content is consistent with the expected EMC — the flooring may be ready for installation without waiting additional days.
Why multiple moisture readings matter
A single moisture reading does not represent an entire shipment of flooring. Moisture can vary from board to board or between bundles due to storage and transportation conditions.
For this reason, installers should measure a representative sample of boards from multiple bundles throughout the shipment. Comparing the flooring's moisture content to the calculated EMC — and verifying the subfloor is within the manufacturer's allowable range — provides one of the most reliable, science-based methods for determining when hardwood flooring is ready for installation.

Hardwood Acclimation, EMC & ASTM Moisture Testing — The Complete Guide
Proper acclimation is the single most important step in a successful engineered hardwood installation. Wood is a hygroscopic material: it absorbs and releases moisture until it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding air. When flooring is installed at the wrong moisture content, it expands or contracts after installation, causing cupping, gapping, buckling, and finish damage. What is EMC and how is it calculated?
Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) is the moisture wood reaches when it is in balance with ambient temperature and relative humidity. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory publishes EMC tables that map temperature and RH to an expected wood moisture content. The NWFA installation target for hardwood flooring is 6–9% EMC. The NWFA acclimation protocol
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) defines a structured acclimation protocol that Müller Graff follows:
- The building must be fully enclosed with windows and doors installed.
- HVAC must be operational for a minimum of 14 days before flooring delivery.
- Jobsite temperature is held at 60–80°F (15–27°C) with 30–50% relative humidity.
- Flooring acclimates for 3–5 days minimum, cartons open, stored flat in the installation room.
- The flooring moisture content must be within 4 percentage points of the subfloor MC.
- All readings are documented and retained for warranty validation.
ASTM moisture testing for subfloors
Before installation, subfloor moisture must be quantified. For concrete slabs, ASTM F2170 (in-situ relative humidity) is the preferred quantitative test, measuring internal slab moisture at 40% depth. ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride) measures surface vapor emission but does not capture internal slab conditions. ASTM F710 governs overall concrete preparation. For wood subfloors, ASTM D4442 is the oven-dry reference method used to calibrate jobsite moisture meters.
